Hope Springs Eternal
"Red," a well-connected convict who is serving three consecutive life sentences in Maine's Shawshank State Prison, explains that he's wisely "Institutionalized" to the routine and hierarchy of the system that keeps him. The Outside becomes like a dream you once had, and that forgetting words like dignity, hope and freedom are the key to survival here. That is until Andy Dufresne arrives.
Serving two life sentences for the murder of his wife and her lover, Dufresne isn't like the regular brood that are thrown in Shawshank - as a former banking executive, Red knows Andy is definitely the odd-man out in this environment. For a time, Red just observes the tell-tale signs of Andy's horrific initiation into the system, but then one day Andy approaches him with a request for a rock-hammer.
Based on a novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" from Different Seasons, this unabridged tale focuses on a man convicted of murder, who finds himself in a prison ruled by a sadistic warden and secretly operated by a clever convict.
The story is narrated by Frank Muller.
