Now, folks, tell me if this sounds familiar to you: a movie comes out that everyone seems to be having a ball ripping apart, but you loved it. Despite the nay-sayers, you hold-fast in the face of criticism, clutching the DVD to your chest with your tongue firmly and defiantly stuck out at them. Now you have a visual of my personal post-purchase experience with the film, Legion. I'm sorry, if I want an artsy-fartsy and intellectually moving film, I'll watch one. But sometimes, I just love a campy, guilty-pleasure flick...
Legion starts out as the Archangel Michael drops down to Earth from heaven. Landing in a rainy, back-alley of Los Angeles, he breaks into a store; stealing clothes and an arsenal of weapons. (The beginning did feel a lot like the original Terminator; but not a deal breaker) Michael tears the angelic wings from his back and, after stealing a police car, heads for the desert town of Paradise Falls.
There, in a grubby road-side diner, the line will be drawn in the sand. Michael and a colorful group of humans will fight the ultimate battle for mankind. For it is Judgment Day....
Legion, Directed and Co-Written by Scott Stewart was a pleasant surprise for this viewer; I was locked-in from the beginning. Sure, the story line is a little cheesy, but that's half the fun of a guilty pleasure movie; one doesn't always have to be morally and intellectually challenged to have a good time. For the most part it's the beautiful CG work and special effects that really make this movie. A bit of bible knowledge is helpful, but certainly not required to enjoy this one.
So, what are we left with? How's about 100 minutes of heavily armed, high-octane action scenes? Along for the ride with these terrified characters, the viewer is trapped in the diner with them, not knowing what nasty thing is coming next, and it makes for an entertaining ride. I truly enjoyed Legion, but I leave it up to you, folks!
Definitely recommended as a rental and/or purchase... Rent it first, though, and see what you think!
