With the looming threat of my favorite, friendly neighborhood Blockbuster closing down on me, I grabbed as many horror DVD's this week as I could carry. Who knows how many years I kept that store in business, folks! One of the movies I snatched up, Sorority Row was actually pretty darn entertaining. While it certainly won't be winning any awards, it was amusing for this horror fan...
The movie, based on the 1983 flick, The House on Sorority Row, begins at an all-girl fraternity, where pledge-week and alcohol consumption are in high-gear. But, when a prank goes horribly awry and one of their own is killed, the sisters of Theta-Pi vow to never speak of it again. Doing so would ruin all of their lives and likely land them all in jail for murder.
But, eight months later, during the graduation night festivities, the girls begin to get ominous text messages. Someone knows what they did and is coming for them, one by one. A homicidal maniac in a black cloak is seeking revenge on the snooty frat girls of Theta-Pi...
Now, this may sound like just another teeny-bopper slasher flick and most of it is. We have the expected who-dunnit theme along with who's-gonna-get-carved-up-next plot. But, I was super impressed with the opening tragedy. I refuse to give it away, folks, but it was a very cool "WHOAH!" moment that kept me watching the rest of the film...
Better suited for college boys than anyone, Sorority Row was still a fun watch. Sure there are plenty of scantly-clad co-eds to be had in this film, along with their inept boyfriends, and the villain's identity keeps you guessing; it's a fun, non-thinking, guilty pleasure flick.
Sorority Row is a steamy slasher worthy of a dorm-party-staple or a date-night rental.
