From Roland Emmerich, the Director who brought us The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day comes the blockbuster CG extravaganza, 2012. While it is most certainly an action adventure that impressed a lot of folks, I found it exhausting....
The movie prays on our darkest fear; the sky is falling and we're all going to die and there's nothing you can do about it. Or so sayeth the Mayan calendar and it will happen on a cool day in December of 2012.
The movie 2012 gets off to a good start when Scientist Adrian (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Serenity) detects some massive shifting of the Earth's continental plates and dangerous solar flares. He begins warning the government that the Earth as we know it is doomed. We then follow Jackson (John Cusack, 1408) who is camping with his children on a Yellowstone National Park Trip. When they come upon a kooky camper (Woody Harrelson, Zombieland), they soon become convinced that they are in danger and that this guy's conspiracy theories are not as ludicrous as they sound. But the only way to survive the end-of-the- Earth-scenario is to get off of the planet Earth altogether...
What follows is exactly what you expect it will be. Jaw-dropping CG work takes the viewer on a roller-coaster ride as the Earth begins falling apart; Los Angeles crumbles into the sea, waves overtake the tallest of mountains, volcanoes erupt and the White House collapses. While this movie claims to be an epic adventure, I found it to be 3 hours of 'must-go-faster-must-go-faster' moments; scene after scene after scene.
Sure, 2012 is visually awe-inspiring, but with every second being a narrow escape or a close-call, I was worn out by the final act; which dragged on forever, it seemed. This cast of fabulously talented folks is all but lost in the terrible script... I would have liked to have seen more character development and better dialogue from such a big budget movie.
If you loved movies like Independence Day and Deep Impact, then you'll probably like 2012. But, I would definitely rent it before you buy it because, for me, one viewing was more than enough.
