The last few years, the end-of-the-world movies have been everything from hysterically funny to all-out zombie-fests. The movie, Carriers, from writer/director team Alex and David Pastor, takes a powerfully dramatic look at an unsettling and entirely possible future for the human race. Though not a high-octane, fast-paced movie; its story is what makes it a worthy watch.
We never do learn the cause of this apocalyptic virus, but the movie starts as four friends zoom along an empty highway in a stolen Mercedes. Swilling beer and joking with his worried passengers, Brian (Chris Pine, Star Trek) is driving towards a remote beach that he remembers from his youth. There, they hope to hide-out until the virus is contained or gone completely.
But, there are other survivors in the ruined towns and on the highways; some are fine and some are sick. But whatever their conditions, all are frantically searching for gas, supplies and sanctuary from the virus. These four friends have not yet contracted the deadly disease, but they are far from safe...
Carriers was a pleasant surprise for this horror fan and much more than I had been expecting. Packing more emotional drama than blood and gore, the film locks you in with its well written story line and dialogue. The cast does an amazing job with some of these heart-wrenching scenes; creating real, sympathetic characters that you cannot help but root for.
All in all, Carriers is well worth seeing and I recommend it as a rental and/or purchase.
