I'm always on the look-out for new sci-fi films and it's rare to find a really good one. Well, I was pleasantly surprised with the film, Pandorum. I had heard some mixed opinions of it (which I promptly ignored) and set off to my friendly neighborhood Blockbuster... I can tell you that this tense, disturbing thriller will definitely be joining my collection.
Deep in space, Corporal Bower (Ben Foster, 30 Days of Night) and Lt. Payton (Dennis Quaid, Horsemen) wake from hyper-sleep and find they are alone on-board an immense space-craft. With no memory of their mission or identities, they set about trying to get the power back on and contact earth. (Their space-craft, Elysium, creates a frightening atmosphere as it creaks and pulses around them and is almost a character in and of itself.)
Needing to get the ship up and running again, Bower tries to get to the nuclear reactor. In the dark bowels of the ship, he encounters humanoid monsters; they are pale, ferocious and terrifying. Are these things all that are left of their crew? And more importantly, will it happen to them, as well?
Pandorum is everything a good sci-fi thriller needs to be. It has the determined heroes, (along with the reluctant ones, of course), a creepy space-craft full of dark corners and shadowy passages. And, let's not forget, a seemingly unstoppable evil, nasty thing to chase them around inside of it.
Director Christian Alvart (Antibodies) does a marvelous job with this film and is definitely a talent to watch out for. I was instantly reminded of the movies Alien and Event Horizon; two of my of all time favorites.
All in all, Pandorum is a high-octane sci-fi film full of great action, scares and tension
and I highly recommended it as a rental and/or purchase.
