I do understand the reasons why filmmakers make sequel after sequel; they are trying to squeeze every dollar out of a movie franchise while they can. But, as is often the case, they go too far and end up putting out some disappointing movies. As much as the viewers may love the original, now they have a sour taste in their mouth from one lousy sequel after another. Such is the problem with the film, The Final Destination. While mildly amusing, it was a little too familiar......
Like all of the Final Destination movies, the film starts out with a holy-cow-that-was-cool accident at a local speedway. Burning racecars plop into the stands, killing fans of all ages in every violent and gruesome manner that you can imagine.
But, for Nick (Bobby Campo) and his pals, Death by Chevrolet is avoided at the last second by a vision of the mayhem to come. Sprinting to safety, the survivors are left to ponder their good fortune and avoid the nagging what-if's? But, they will discover that Father Death has not been sated and is still coming for them in the order they should have died in.
Can Nick and his terrified friends break the chain of deaths and outsmart fate itself?
Reading the above back to myself, I have to groan, folks. It's fairly obvious that I didn't care much for the movie, right? While Director David R. Ellis (Snakes on a Plane) did do a nice job, as did the cast, the movie was an hour and a half of deja-vu. I mean how many times can we watch the same darn movie? The only difference from its predecessors is the initial accident and the manner of deaths to follow.
I don't recommend buying The Final Destination unless you are a hard-core fan of the series. For the rest of us the movie is just a last resort rental.
