If you are a fan of Asian horror then you have undoubtedly seen one of The Pang Brothers movies. Whether it was The Eye or perhaps Re-Cyle, once you get a feel for their style, you never forget it. Engrossing, unique and visually arresting; Abnormal Beauty is one of my favorites...
The movie begins as we meet Jiney (Race Wong), a photography/art student, she is always searching for the next great shot. One day she comes upon a car accident; the pedestrian victim bleeding and dying in the street. Jiney becomes excited and starts snapping away with her camera. Soon, she is seeing death everywhere and cannot help herself; photographing dead animals, trying to recapture the high of the car accident. Now obsessed with images of death, Jiney will sink deeper and deeper into her new hobby and discover that her addiction is deadly.
I absolutely loved this movie; seeing the Pang Brothers delve into human nature's morbid fascination with death is chilling. Though we hate to admit it, we are all curious; what happens to us and what would it feel like to see it? We know we are not supposed to think about such things and that is what makes this movie so frightening.
The Pang Brothers have really out-done themselves with Abnormal Beauty and it was nice to see them get away from the ghost-theme again; a theme which can be a little too predictable in Asian horror. Race Wong is perfect in the role of Jiney; we sympathize with her right alongside being mortified at her behavior. Blend some great characters with The Pang Brothers classic visual style and you've got a great movie! As the tension builds, that creepy feeling slides down your back like a cold draft...
All in all, Abnormal Beauty is a deliciously disturbing horror movie and well worth a rental and/or purchase. Dim the lights for this one!
