If you think about it, most of our childhood angst and anguish was sent our way during our teenage years. Most of us get past it, but sometimes those memories of pains and insults stay with us for some years. But, how often do you hear about elementary school torments creating life-long grudges? In the Korean slasher, Bloody Reunion, we learn just how long the wee ones can stay angry; some even resorting to murder years later...
The movie starts out at the sea-side home of a retired teacher named Ms. Park (Mi-hee Oh). Terminally ill, Ms. Park is looking forward to having some former students coming to visit her for the weekend. As her guests arrive we meet the motley crew; the alcoholic, the drug-addict, the nerd, the snobby rich chick, the good girl and the shy kid. Each of them have a memory of dear Ms. Park and not all of them are good.
As the evening progresses and the booze flows freely, the secrets start coming out. Ms. Park is mortified that they remember her being so cruel to them. But, the seemingly innocent Ms. Park has a dark, terrible secret of her own and the students know it. As each of them have a motive and many an opportunity, the viewer gets to play who-dunnit as the students begin to die grisly deaths at the hands of a vicious killer that wears a childish bunny mask.
Director Dae-woong Lim and Writer Se-yeol Park have crafted a slick little slasher with Bloody Reunion. Just when you think you know who the villain is, the film takes another twist and the jaw-dropping and gruesome kill scenes make this film far from the usual Asian horror fare. These scenes had me writhing and pressing my body ever deeper into my couch, folks!
All in all, Bloody Reunion is great, slasher fun that is guaranteed to keep you guessing and is well worth a rental and or purchase.
