When I saw the cover for the horror movie 100 Feet, two simple lines grabbed me:
"Accused of Killing Her Husband... Confined to the Home He Now Haunts."
My mind racing with fabulous possibilities, I rented it immediately. A promising film premise gets me every time. Now that I have watched it, I wish 100 Feet had been as good as those two lines...
The movie begins as Marnie (Famke Janssen, Taken) is being driven home from jail by Detective Shanks (Robby Cannavale, The Promotion). After serving a couple of years for killing her husband, the judge has seen fit to put her on house arrest for the remainder of her sentence.
But, she is not alone. Though she killed Mike (Michael Pare, Dark World), in self-defense, the abusive husband is now an angry, powerful ghost. When the beatings resume, poor Marnie cannot leave the house. Can she survive the dangerous abuse again and who would ever believe her?
I know this story-line sounds fabulous, and for the first half-hour it truly is. On the first few nights Marnie hears thumps and bumps and foot-steps... That part is scary. But then, we get to see the ghost of Mike; wavy and out of focus, this apparition is just not frightening in any way. Dressed in his blue burial suit, Mike is visible until he grabs or hits Marnie; then he is invisible. Very strange and not very effective.
The movie does have some good qualities. Ms. Janssen does a nice job in her role; the viewer totally sympathizing with her plight. But, I think that her entrance back into her home is probably one of the best scenes in the movie, folks. With covered furniture and dusty floors, the dark rooms almost become a character in the movie. Untouched since the night of her husband's death, Marnie is mortified that the blood stain is still on the kitchen wall. When we realize that she will be alone for a year, we worry for her in this scary place.
All in all, 100 Feet just doesn't deliver on its promise and the ending is about as corny as they come. I can only recommend this movie as a rental, but it is probably not a good choice for gals that live alone or have an abusive ex.
