We've all come across one of these, fondled its cover and occasionally even dared to rent it; the really bad horror movie. As a few wretched gems-of-the-genre seem to be gravitating towards me lately, I shouldn't wonder that Skeleton Crew fell into my lap this week. Now that I have watched it, I am convinced that my patio furniture was blessed with more original ideas than these filmmakers were...

Skeleton Crew begins as an under-funded film crew is heading to the Russian border, intent on filming a horror movie at a dilapidated mental hospital. Closed in the 1970's, the facility was the sight of a horrible massacre where a doctor made a series of snuff films starring his patients.

When the film crew finds the crazed doctor's home movies, the Director is suddenly overcome by evil urges and soon begins killing off his stars...

With the horrible acting and corny script, Skeleton Crew reminded me of the equally bad 1999's House on Haunted Hill. Then, while watching through the credits, I noticed that a couple of names kept popping-up. It appears that title Skeleton Crew is literal; it was a family affair between the Molin family and the Lepola family. Along with being the writers and directors, these names make up most of the cast and crew as well. As with most people, I can do a gaggle of things at once, too, but I can't do any of them well. This was surely their downfall; one word: delegate!

All in all, the best part of this movie was a little scene at the end of the credits when a pair of movie-goers pan the film. So, it would seem, even the filmmakers realized that this was a dreck of a movie and had a little fun with it.

So, movie fans, avoid the Skeleton Crew if at all possible. It was 90 minutes of my life that I'll never get back and I cannot, in good conscience, recommend it as either a rental or a purchase.
