I stumbled across this movie, Frayed, at where else? My favorite local Blockbuster video store, of course. (Spending so much time and money there, I really should demand my own parking space, folks.)

The horrible cover art for Frayed caused me to pause a long while before I managed to pick it up. You know that, even for the worst movie ever, they'll hire someone to write an irresistible back cover; it can be frustrating to pick a good one. Now that I have watched this movie, I'm glad that I grabbed it! But, I must warn you, Frayed has one of the most brutal and realistic killing scenes right at the beginning...

The movie begins at 5-year old, Sara's, birthday party. Her mom is video-taping the event as the presents are opened and the cake is cut. But, Sarah's 8-year old brother, Kurt, is angry and jealous over his sister's party. Soon after the party is over, he brutally beats his mother with a baseball bat; and it's all caught on the home video. This scene is so vicious and realistic looking, I had to watch it with one eye closed and my knees pulled up to my chest, believe it or not.

Well, little Kurt is understandably locked away in an asylum; diagnosed as incurable. 13 years later, he paints himself up like a twisted clown and escapes from the hospital. Killing everyone he meets, Kurt heads for home....

After that terrifying intro, Frayed seems to stumble a bit before taking off again. I can say that Kurt's character is very scary (who isn't a little freaked-out by clowns?) and there are some original and gruesome kills along the way.

While the acting is a little weak and the long, teen-sex scene is tiresome, Frayed does have a fairly good story-line. Reminding me a little of Halloween and Michael Meyers, it was refreshing when Frayed's filmmakers threw in some big twists at the end, thus taking it in a different direction.

With plenty of tension and a scary bad-guy, Frayed is low-budget horror fun and makes for a good rental. I wouldn't buy it before renting it, for the twists will only surprise you once.
