When I picked up the movie, Cravings, I was not really expecting to be wowed by it. The bad cover art screamed: "There's a crappy movie inside this box...Rent me now!" But after reading the synopsis on the back cover, I was intrigued and now that I have watched this little British sleeper, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised...
The movie begins as we meet Dr. Steve Hughes (Richard Harrington, The Contractor); a handsome psychiatrist trying to recover after his wife's suicide. Having been the one to find her limp and bleeding body in the bathtub, he now spends his days trying to bury himself in work and prescribed anti-depressants.
But when a strange, young girl is admitted to the hospital for slicing her wrists, Dr. Hughes gets personally involved; determined to save this girl from herself, the way he could not save his wife. Dr. Hughes will soon discover that little Nina (Jaime Winston, Boogie-Woogie) is much more than your ordinary psych-patient; she has a taste for blood.
The situation gets more interesting when Dr. Hughes falls for Nina's mother, Liz, (Louise Delamere) and Nina's violent and depraved behavior goes from bad to worse. Seems Nina can no longer control her blood-lust... Is she a disturbed young woman or a real vampire?
The movie, Cravings, does not follow in the well-worn path of creature/horror movies. Despite its premise, it deals more with Dr. Hughes' interpretation of Nina's strange illness rather than his being in need of garlic and a crucifix at their next appointment. The movie's tension keeps building as the story goes along and Nina falls deeper into her obsession with blood.
While the movie does feel a bit slow at times, it is creepy and purposeful; all leading up to some good shockers at the end. Nicely acted and filmed, Cravings is worth a watch.
Definitely makes for a tasty rental!
