Never have I found a horror movie that polarizes fans like this latest straight-to-DVD film, Plague Town. Some folks rave that it is the best Indie horror to grace the rental shelves and others cannot get past the low-budget, 70's horror feel of it. I have always thought that even if a film is decidedly low-budget, it does not automatically follow that the movie will be bad. Every horror film should be judged by all of its merits and flaws and I found Plague Town interesting...

The movie begins as we join a highly dysfunctional family as the visiting the Ireland country-side; they are trying to find their father's ancestors, evidently, when they get lost. Having missed their bus back into the city, they bicker and curse constantly as they wander down the back roads.

As night approaches, they see the lights of a small village and decide to go for help. This will prove fatal as this is not your ordinary Irish village; there is something seriously wrong with all of the children. Plagued by a strange disease from birth, these children are eagerly waiting for unsuspecting strangers to stumble into town...

Written and directed by David Gregory, Plague Town has a very familiar feel to it; like the Children of the Corn on steroids. Yes, the film is low budget and the acting is questionable, but there are some unsettling and original scenes. The deformed children do not speak, only giggle from the shadows; so it is unclear what their motives are. That and the creepy introduction of Rosemary (Kate Aspiwal), a slow-moving teen in a freaky white wedding gown and bulging eyes, are not easy to forget.

All in all, Plague Town has a good story-line and some shocking visuals, but I recommend that you rent it first.
