If you are like me and have had it up to here with the expected plots of the "Cute-Chick-Survives-Nightmare" movies, then I have a tasty little film that's right up your alley. Shuttle, nicely directed by first-timer, Edward Anderson, is a tense thriller with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing right up until the shocking ending...
Flying back into Los Angeles after a girl's weekend in Mexico, Melanie (Peyton List, TV's Madmen) and her gal-pal Jules (Cameron Goodman, Rise) find themselves caught in the rain without a cab ride home. They, along with two friendly young men, are considering their limited late-night options when a lone airport-shuttle pulls up to the curb.
The shuttle driver (Tony Curran, Midnight Meat Train) is overly friendly as he hurries them into the warm bus and shuts the doors. The bus speeds off towards downtown, but the girls suddenly notice that they have taken a wrong turn and are touring the empty streets of an industrial neighborhood. What seems like only bad directions turns into their worst nightmare when the passengers discover that this driver has no intention of taking them home...
I really enjoyed watching Shuttle, which can be taken as a cautionary tale for all travelers. But, then again, it is not in our make-up to distrust service workers; they are there to help us, right? Shuttle and its premise are a frightening possibility for every young woman. Warning: There are things worse than death.
Though Shuttle feels a bit low budget, the filmmakers have done a great job with the filming and selection of cast members. Every actor aces their role, though I would have liked to have seen more character development. Sadly, the pace of the film does not allow for that and takes off immediately. This cold, calculating kidnapper with no clear motive makes for a creepy bad guy! And this movie has an ending that you never see coming.
This film makes me think that the next time I take a cab or a bus, I'm gonna want to see the driver's ID, his credit report as well as question all his ex-wives before I ride with him!
All in all, Shuttle is a cool thriller that is worth a rental and/or purchase.
