Like many of my fellow horror fans, I have been waiting for the release of Drag Me to Hell for what seemed like ages. The t.v. commercials and critic blurbs only intensified my anticipation; making this movie sound terrifying and a must-see in my book. I counted the days...

I have just come home from seeing the film and I have to say that it wasn't what I had been expecting...

Drag Me to Hell begins as perky blonde loan officer, Christine (Alison Lohman, Beowulf) is hoping for a big job promotion at a Los Angeles bank branch. Having been told by her boss to be more assertive, Christine has to deliver some terrible news to an old and shabbily dressed gypsy woman. Upon hearing that her house is to be repossessed, the old woman is so upset that the security guards have to show her out.

But Christine does not realize who she's messed with. Later that evening, in the bank's parking structure, the old hag attacks Christine and places a curse upon her.

Shaken from her run-in with the senior-citizen-from-hell, Christine goes home, believing the ordeal to be over. But when she begins to hear voices and sees an ominous shadow of a goat-headed man, she goes to a psychic for answers. The seer will tell Christine that her terrifying visions will only get worse and that in three short days a monstrous demon will come to drag her soul to hell...

Now, don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this movie once I settled into the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously. In his classic and predictable Raimi style, Director and Co-Writer Sam Raimi (the Evil Dead and Spiderman movies) delivers a movie which has big, frightening scares followed by hysterical and even silly moments. The Boo's are delivered with a loud bang and the humor is very tongue-in-cheek.

Raimi fans will appreciate the classic gross-out scenes in this movie: free-flowing bodily fluids, massive amounts of insects and all things slimy.

So if you like your horror on the silly side, go see Drag Me to Hell. It will have you laughing, jumping and squirming in your seat.

If you are expecting a truly terrifying horror movie, I think you will be disappointed and you should see something else. But, if you're willing to keep an open mind, Drag Me to Hell is well worth seeing.

Overall Rating : 3 1/2
