The Uninvited, the remake of the wildly popular Korean movie, A Tale of Two Sisters, actually held some surprises for me. Usually PG-13 horror movies, staring the beautiful and under-fed, sort of leave me with a ho-hum feeling at the end. Not so with this one, folks...

When doe-eyed Anna (Emily Browning, Darkness Falls) is released from a mental hospital after 10 months, she comes home to find that her father (David Strathairn, Cold Souls) is no longer grieving his wife's death. While Anna had attempted suicide after her mother's horrifying death and been locked-away, Daddy had moved on with a new love, his wife's former nurse, Rachel (Elizabeth Banks, Slither).

There is something inherently creepy about Anna's new step-mom-from-hell and Elizabeth Banks plays the part a little too well (My hat's off to her, for she even gave me the shivers).

Soon Anna is having nightmares and visions of her dead mother; she seems to be trying to warn her about something. So, Anna and her big sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel, Red Mist), dive into Rachel's past; they are determined to find out who she really is and what she's been hiding. When Anna confronts Rachel with the murderous truth, the sisters are terrified to discover that they have awoken a dangerous enemy.

I was not expecting to be wowed by this film but it turned out to be creepy as hell with plenty of twists. Sure, when you've seen as many scary movies as I have, you sort of see some of the Boos coming from 50 paces. But, The Uninvited had just enough surprises to keep me guessing and the ending was one I never expected.

With a decidedly Hand that Rocks the Cradle and Sixth Sense feeling to it, The Uninvited, nicely directed by The Guard Bros., is well worth a rental and/or purchase.

Overall Rating : 3
