I admit to being more than a little leery when I heard that filmmakers had seen fit to dredge-up The Butterfly Effect story yet again. While I had enjoyed the original, with a strapping, young Ashton Kutcher, I found its sequel a bit frustrating. So a #3 ? Been there, done that, got the crappy t-shirt...
The Butterfly Effect 3 begins as we meet Sam (Chris Carmack); a psychic who helps the police solve crimes. Sam has not told the detectives the unique way in which he does this; he actually mentally 'jumps' through time to the crime scene, takes a look at the criminal and reports back to the police, nailing the bad guys with amazing accuracy.
One night, a young lady knocks on Sam's door, offering to pay him a gaggle of money to find her sister's real killer. Sam will break his own rule and actually get involved with the case and interfering with the past always has dire consequences.
While the writers, director and cast obviously tried their best to put a new face on a tired story, but the result is the same; we know how it's going to end, right? We know that the brooding, hunky, yet misunderstood leading man is going to 'jump', we know he's going to try and fix things and we know that the results will be disastrous.
I understand that the desperate, out-of-control emotion that drives this movie trio, is meant to strike fear and horror into the hearts of viewers; but we can only be surprised by the story line once. Twice if you're lucky.
The Butterfly Effect 3 ended up being a tiring hour and a half of de-ja-vu for me and I can only recommend this movie as a rental; or perhaps a purchase for the trilogy's rabid fans.
Overall Rating : 2
