I just finished watching Slaughter, another one of 2008's - 8 Films to Die For. Anxious for it to be over, I could only manage a sigh at the end; this is not a film to die for. Like the young women in this movie, I was reminded of my wasted and poorly spent 20's; crowded bars, bad dates and the ever-present hang-over. Like that decade was for me, the movie Slaughter is a waste of precious time...
The movie begins as Faith (Amy Shiels) has moved to a new city to escape an abusive ex-boyfriend. Adjusting to her new town, Faith meets Lola (Lucy Holt) in a bar one night and they become fast friends. But, when Faith's ex-beau finds her, Lola invites Faith to come and live with her on her family farm. (Bring on the blood - Because the farm also happens to have a swine-slaughter-house)
Grateful for a new hide-out, Faith moves in with Lola and her odd family. While she enjoys her new feeling of safety and the acres of grassy hills for horseback riding, Faith becomes worried when Lola's one-night-stands begin to disappear.
Faith begins to sniff around the farm, dodging Lola's weird family, and soon finds the unimaginable is happening in the slaughter-house...
Slaughter is one of those horror movies where the viewer waits and waits for something scary to happen. One could almost skip the first half-hour and not really miss anything. Near the end, you are tossed a twist, some gore, and more than the suggestion of incest. While the ending does pick-up a little; it's too late to save this one.
I can only recommend Slaughter as a last-resort rental.
