"There's something OFF with these people..." - Stephanie (Heidi Dippold)

Having missed House when it was in the theaters, I had been looking forward to the DVD release this last week. I am sorry to say, House turned out to be one of those trailer-is-better-than-the-movie situations...

The movie begins as country singer Stephanie (Heidi Dippold) and her hubby, Jack (Reynaldo Rosales) are zipping through the back woods of Alabama. They have gotten themselves miserably lost on their way to a marriage counselor's appointment in Birmingham. After receiving some strange directions from a creepy State Trooper (Michael Madsen, Kill Bill 2) the couple get a flat tire on a lonely dirt road.

Bickering as how to best correct their situation, the two stumble upon The Wayside Inn, a crumbling B&B, as well as their only hope. Once inside, they meet another couple who are having the same problem.

Soon, a strange and overly-friendly family slithers-in to welcome them and the two young couples will discover that this old house is not what it seems and they will be lucky to get out alive...

While watching this movie go through its paces, I was reminded of a number of other movies. Knowing that imitation is the highest form of flattery; unless the mimicking is stand-up comedy, you best copy it well.

In the classic film, Event Horizon, the space ship knew your secrets and tortured you with them. While they have tried that theme in House, sadly, it was not executed well. The film takes so many different paths, trying to be all things frightening, and it ends up being very scattered, but not at all scary.

What starts out as an interesting movie premise becomes very strange and even corny and then finally slaps the viewer with a sappy ending more worthy of a bad made-for-t.v. movie...

Only recommended as a rental.
