Don't trust friends, family... Not even yourself.
Voices, my second adventure into the third batch of the After Dark - 8 Films to Die For series, was a pleasant and entertaining surprise; one that I wasn't expecting. If you have seen the 2006 selection of 8-Films, you know that these movies can be hit-and-miss; one will be great, the next one, well...not so much. So, I was not ready for the scary, thrill-ride that this Korean horror film had in store for me...
Based on the best-selling comic-book series, Voices begins as we follow an average teenage girl named Ka-in (Yoon Jin-Seo) as she goes about her day. High-school is full of the norm for Ka-in; friends and gossip and who's-that-cute-new-guy?
The next week, Ka-in and her family are attending the wedding of her pretty aunt. At the reception, the gowned bride plummets from a third-story balcony; making a bloody mess of the reception hall. But, when Ka-in goes to visit her Aunt in the hospital, she witnesses another family member brutally stabbing her helpless Aunt, right in her hospital bed.
Now, this may sound horrendous and, trust me, it's bloody and terrifying to watch. But things are about to get worse. Soon, other family members are meeting gruesome fates as well - all at the hands of loved ones. As relatives whisper about a curse, Ka-in realizes that she's next. Off to find answers, Ka-in tries to stay alive; fearing everyone. When simple jealousy becomes uncontrollable rage and murder, how can it ever be stopped?
I really enjoyed watching Voices; and after meeting all the characters, the movie is a mile-a-minute scare-a-thon. Never letting up, the viewer is horrified for Ka-in's character, wondering who's going to try to murder her next.
Voices director, Oh Ki-Hwan (who also co-wrote the screenplay) does a fabulous job and every scene is a disturbing treat. With a cast of talented actors and beautiful music; Voices is fresh and scary and downright impressive. While the plot does go a little squirrelly at the end, becoming far too busy, Voices is still well worth a rental and/or purchase...
Overall Rating: 3 1/2
