From the makers of 30 Days of Night and The Messengers, we are again asked the question: Do you know what is hiding under your bed?
While I had really enjoyed the first Boogeyman, I found Boogeyman 2 a little disappointing. So, imagine my concern when I saw that they had gone and released another one. The more sequels I watch, the more I am convinced that making horror sequels is much like herding cats: difficult at best and can be a complete disaster...
Boogeyman 3 begins in a co-ed dorm building at a typical college; promiscuous students, frat parties and all-night finals-cramming is the norm. We meet perky little Sarah (Erin Cahill, Sweet) who, after a late night of studying is awoken by her gal-pal, Audrey (Nikki Sanderson). Audrey is visibally shaken, making wild claims that the Boogeyman is coming to kill her.
The next evening, Sarah goes to check on Audrey and witnesses a strange, black- clothed figure strangling her friend to death. When asked how Audrey died, Sarah lies to the police as she fears for her sanity. But when more co-eds begin to die violent, bloody deaths, Sarah begins to wonder if it really is the Boogeyman.
All I could manage when this film finally ended was a relieved groan. Boogeyman 3 held no surprises, every BOO was expected, and the acting left a bunch to be desired. The only rule these filmmakers seemed to follow was 'Let's show more breasts, kill people in every way possible and, whatever you do, throw more blood in the scene'. There was so much fake blood in this movie, it was almost ridiculous. And, unlike this movie's predecessores, the viewer actually gets to see the scraggly Boogeyman in video-game-like flashes. His greasy hair and corny laugh make the Boogeyman look more like a cranky homeless man than your worst nightmare.
After being subject to one crazy death after the next, I had had more than enough of this movie. Death by foot-locker, Death by bong, and death by clothes-dryer only had me laughing at how desperate this movie seemed to be.
All in all, I only recommend Boogeyman 3 if you're easily scared or a raving fan of the series. Outside of that, trust me, rent something else...
