If you like your horror film with a little bit of whimsy and a healthy dose of humor, then have I found a rare gem of a movie that should be on your list of "must-sees!" In Delicatessen, directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) and Marc Caro bring us a beautiful vision of post-apocalyptic France set in the mid-century. With the skies blackened from war and vegetables unable to grow, the quest for food becomes a daily struggle.

We are then taken to a grubby apartment building where a handful of quirky residents try to survive. Now, this cast of misfits are a real hoot! There are two men who make old-fashioned cow-whistles, a man who collects live frogs and snails, and even a suicidal woman who bungles every attempt to listen to the voices and do herself in. We also have a butcher, who peddles a mystery meat; yep, you guessed it, human meat. The tenants know what the meat is, just screw on a happy face, eat it, and hope they are not next.

When a new tenant arrives, the butcher's daughter, Julia (Laura Dougnac) falls in love with the whimsical and charming man. Begging her butcher-father to spare Louison (Dominique Pinon, Alien Resurrection) Julie hopes her father will not carve up her new sweetheart for tomorrow's dinner...

After reading the DVD cover, with its synopsis and a few stills, I expected Delicatessen to be violent and bloody and it was neither, but, all the same, I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen. Simply magical and highly entertaining, this quirky black-comedy delivers first-rate performances all set to a playful musical score. Though the horror of it is suggested, it is certainly not the main focus.

All in all, I definitely recommend Delicatessen as a rental and/or purchase. It is an experience well worth savoring!
