To all my fellow movie fans; I simply HAVE to tell you about this movie I stumbled across at my friendly neighborhood Blockbuster. Whatever your plans may be for the weekend; drop them and run out and rent Let the Right One In. Based on the best-selling novel by John A. Lindqvist, this brilliant vampire movie absolutely amazed me!
The movie begins in a wintry, stark Swedish town where 12-year old Oskar (Kare Hederbrant) lives with his divorced mother. Oskar has no friends and is tortured daily by the bullies from his school.
Soon, Oskar begins to talk to a new-comer at his apartment complex; pale and strange, Eli (Lina Leandersson) only comes out at night and smells a little funny. But, she seems as lonely as poor Oskar and the two quickly form a bond. What Oskar does not know is that his new pal is a vampire and the town's body count is adding up.
It was so touching to watch Oskar's patience with this strange little girl who had never had a human friend. Simple things like a warm hug or playing with a toy are fascinating to Eli and her curiosity about Oskar helps her overcome her endless hunger. She, in turn, helps Oskar become more assertive with the school bullies. Eli and Oskar- fellow outcasts from society- develop a young, touching love that is unforgettable.
But, when it seems that the police are closing in on Eli, Oskar will be forced to make a life-altering choice...
This movie is not what you'd expect from a modern vampire movie; it is not soaked with blood and violence. What this movie is, is a haunting and tender story; chilling in its realism and beauty. Director Tomas Alfredson gives us a white, snowy back-drop for this visually mesmerizing film and the result is a film you won't soon forget. It is quite simply one of the best vampire movies I've ever seen.
Let the Right One In is a fabulous piece of filmmaking that will terrify you and touch your heart; an absolute must see... Personally, I am buying it immediately for I cannot get this movie out of my head!
Most highly recommended as a rental and purchase!
