If a movie that combines elements of classic films like The Exorcist and Sybil sounds intriguing to you, than have I found the movie you should run out and rent tonight!
I was pleasantly surprised by Dorothy Mills, a spooky little gem from Ireland packing a fabulous storyline and some impressive acting...
When teenage Dorothy (Jenn Murray) is found trying to strangle a 9-month old baby in her care, the teen is shipped off to jail. Convinced that she is psychotic, the doctors plan to keep her a while for treatment.
But a young psychiatrist, Dr. Jane Morton (Carice Van Houten) has heard of Dorothy's story and sets off for the teen's hometown to complete a preliminary analysis of the disturbed girl and her sudden violent behavior.
The Irish isle that the filmmamkers used for this movie is absolutely beautiful. The setting is perfect; misty green hills, craggy cliffs, and wind-tossed seas. The only occupants of this remote island are God-fearing, close-knit and secretive; protective of their own. But, they all seem to fear Dorothy and think God will handle her, not this incoming stranger's Science and Medicine.
We then get to meet Dorothy; a pale and timid girl who doesn't seem violent at all. But when the psychiatrist begins having strange hallucinations and Dorothy speaks in voices that are not her own, we wonder; is this teen girl channeling spirits, wrestling with multiple personalities, or is she truly evil? The psychiatrist tries to help her as things get more frightening...but the town's not talking. Can Dorothy be saved, or does the town saving?
I have to say that Dorothy Mills had me locked in front of the TV from the get-go. It does move along a little slowly at first, but it's not without purpose. Brilliantly directed by Agnes Merlet, the beautiful scenes and creepy atmosphere get you feeling the tension almost immediately. As the story unfolds and the mystery deepens...Well, quite simply; you're hooked.
And I cannot forget to mention Jenn Murray, the young lady that plays Dorothy; she just oozes talent and is so amazing in her role. I should say roles, because she takes on many personas and plays each to perfection.
While not very scary in the horror sense of the word, Dorothy Mills is disturbing, unsettling and totally fabulous.
I definitely recommend this movie as a rental and/or purchase.
