"If you need anything, don't hesitate to scream..." - Hotel Propietor, Gordon (David Moscow)

While I definitely remember the brutal shocks and scares of the original Vacancy, I had my reservations about this straight-to-DVD release, Vacancy 2. Writer Mark Smith is back to bring us a new and chilling story about the beginnings of the blood-soaked Pinewood Motel. In this new chapter, we find that the motel was closed in 2007 and the authorities had found video tapes of over 200 violent murders that had occurred there over the years.

So this prequel, Vacancy 2: The First Cut, takes us back; back to the crazed Mr. Smith's humble beginnings in snuff films, focusing on his first victims; a trio of friends stopping at the motel for the night. The friends will soon come to know who the proprietors of the remote hotel really are and what horrors lie in wait for them.

While Vacancy 2 doesn't really bring any new shocks or scares (after all we know what to expect), the filmmakers did put an interesting spin on it. Instead of just focusing on the plight of the frightened victims, the bad guys are actually interesting. The story seems to focus more on them as they hone their murderous craft.

Even though it doesn't pack the star power of the original Vacancy, British actor Scott G. Anderson is back as the knife-wielding Mr. Smith. The rest of the cast also do a fair job in their roles; I particularly like the annoying character of Tanner, played by Arjay Smith.

While Vacancy 2: The First Cut is just what I thought it would be - tons of bleeding and screaming- I did enjoy watching it. While not overly impressive, it makes for a great rental.

    Overall Rating: 2 1/2
