Welcome to a Frozen Nightmare...
I ran out and rented this movie when it hit the Blockbuster shelves on Tuesday, and I am still giggling about it. Cold Prey is a very slick and scary Norwegian horror film that smacks of favorites like The Shining and Wind Chill. Director Roar Uthaug brings his frightening vision to life with this young and fabulous cast...
The movie begins as five friends are headed to the craggy, remote Norway mountains for a day of snowboarding. (Filmed on location in Jotunheimen, Norway - these scenes are breathtaking)
Miles from the busy public slopes, the friends have found the ultimate snowy snowboarding spot, far off the beaten path. But, when Morten (Rolf K. Larsen) falls and breaks his leg, they are forced to find shelter for the night. Spotting a clutch of buildings, in the valley below, they tie Morten to their snowboards and start downhill.
Finally reaching the valley, they find that the building is a fancy, yet abandoned ski-lodge. As darkness approaches, they force their way in; planning to rest there and send for help the next morning.
After quickly exploring the sprawling hotel and its empty, dusty rooms; the friends gleefully discover the lodge's bar, build a fire and settle-in for the night. But, little do they know; they are not alone... Someone is watching... And this silent predator is wielding a bloody pick-axe...
Cold Prey does sound pretty predictable, I know; while the movie is a mix of some old cliches, as well as some new tricks, it is so well directed and so well acted that it comes off as very fresh and frightening. Its simple premise--being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a lunatic--is terribly effective in this movie. Combine that with the creepy, moody music, and I couldn't take my eyes off the screen!
I watched this film twice: once in the original Norwegian, with English subtitles, and then in the English dubbed form. There is absolutely no comparison. The cast's fabulous acting and emotion only truly comes through in the film's original form. These young actors do such an amazing job; perfectly portraying their character's fear and courage in a hopeless situation.
And don't miss the Special Features on this disc. There is an alternate story-board ending, a silly blooper reel, trailers and a few behind the scenes shorts that are worth seeing.
All in all, Cold Prey is one of the best slasher movies that I have seen in a long time and I recommend you run out and rent it...or buy it, as I plan to. And it just might have you moth-balling your snowboard for the season!
Turn out the lights and enjoy being scared with this one!
