Like may movies-goers, I cringe at the sight of long black hair in horror movies these days. We've all seen this done-to-death and the luscious black locks do little to strike fear in our hearts... Am I right? Well, hang on, because I have found the exception to the rule.
Hair Extensions, the Japanese shocker from Sion Sono, the Director of Suicide Club, is a well written movie that gave this horror-lover a great scare!
The movie begins as dock workers have opened a shipping container, only to find it full of hair - top to bottom. Assuming it is an incoming shipment of hair for the booming hair-extension industry, they are shocked when they find a dead woman embedded in the furry mess.
Not knowing her identity, the woman's corpse is taken to the morgue for autopsy; where they find her innards full of hair as well. Now, here comes the really creepy part!
Yamazaki (Ren Osugi), a morgue intern, loves hair! Loves, loves, loves it. He is thrilled with this hair-woman and, that night, steals her body. Upon their arrival home, Yamazaki discovers that the woman's hair is still growing - from everywhere - her mouth, her eyes, every old wound, etc. It grows and grows; taking over his small apartment.
But this young woman, and her hair, have a deadly secret. When Yamazaki makes hair extensions from the corpse and they installed in local salons, the recipients of these special extensions die in horrible ways. Can a young hair stylist and her niece stop Yamazaki and the endless supply of deadly hair?
I know how silly it sounds; hair killing people? But, these talented Asian filmmakers manage to pull it off with a fresh new story. The result is shocking, fabulous and totally unexpected. I absolutely love it when a movie keeps you guessing right up until the end and Hair Extensions delivers!
The acting in this film was also impressive. Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill) and little Miku Sato both do such a great job acting their roles, as did Mr. Osugi in the role of the twisted intern. The acting and the Direction were great, but the story was what made it really fun. I don't know what was more disturbing - the deadly hair or the crazed man wielding the hair's power for his own twisted desires. It was a double layer of heebie-jeebies to enjoy!
Believe me, this movie still gave me the shivers, even hours after I had watched it. It is twisted, frightening and even humorous at times..All in all, it makes for a wild and entertaining movie.
Recommended as a rental and/or purchase.
