While I was sniffing around my friendly neighborhood Blockbuster yesterday, I found that I was intrigued by the cover art and synopsis of this one DVD; 13 Hours in a Warehouse was the winner of the Best Horror Film at the Indie Spirit Film festival and the Gold Remi Award Winner at the World Fest. Now that I have seen the movie, I am convinced that these film fests must have had some pretty bad flicks for this one to have floated to the top!
The movie begins with five brutish friends having just committed the perfect art-heist. Their plan is to hide out in an abandoned warehouse until the next morning, when a buyer will come and reward them greatly. But, the five friends will soon discover that the old warehouse has more than rats in store for them. They will find that there are three murderous ghosts...and they have been waiting in the building's shadows for their revenge...
Now, this story sounds simple enough, right? Well, Writer/Director Dav Kaufman did write an interesting story; the movie reminded me of Reservoir Dogs meets Pulse. While the characters become distrustful of one-another and draw their guns, the ghosts are picking them off one-by-one.
I had a couple of problems with the movie, though. The acting is marginal, at best and the visual effects are very amateur. Mr. Kaufman had a good story to work with, yet he didn't bring-the-scary to the movie. They went over board with the make-up on the three woman ghosts; so much so that they appear to be angry hookers instead of undead fiends.
If the filmmakers had only hired some decent actors, dialed-down the make-up and the lighting, 13 Hours in a Warehouse would have made for a very cool flick.
All in all, the movie was disappointing, and the story-line is the only thing that saves it from getting a lower rating.
Recommended only as a rental.
