Evil Lives One Floor Down
I happened to stumble across this movie while perusing Blockbuster Video this week and, now that I have seen it, I'm convinced that I should have rented Titanic instead. At least it sinks with dignity.
The Devil's Mercy is a mystery thriller that's just not thrilling on any level. Why such a talented actor like Stephen Rea (The Reaping) came within a hundred miles of this movie is beyond me...
The movie begins as the young Winter family is looking for an available apartment to rent. Enter Tyler (Stephen Rea) and his strange niece, Kayla (Hannah Lochner). They own a lovely stone castle full of Gothic furniture and ornate woodwork and are all to eager to rent to the Winters for a suspiciously small fee.
Not long after the Winters unpack, their landlord's shenanigans begin; Tyler tries to stir up trouble in their marriage and tries to ingratiate himself into their lives. You see, Tyler and his creepy niece want much more than rent from the new tenants.
While this did sound interesting at first, this movie plods painfully along. As we don't know the landlord's motives or why he deems it necessary to lock his neice in her room, we keep waiting for something exciting or scary to happen. Well, it simply never does and even though it does pick up for a second at the end, the climax is a real let down.
I would say that this movie was a train-wreck, but that calls to mind something loud, violent and exciting - The Devil's Mercy is none of those things.
I would recommend that this film be avoided at all costs unless you need a 90 minute nap or perhaps an effective bedtime sedative...
