"You are trapped between light and dark; night and day..." - Eaglesmith
For those of you that have seen the original horror movie, Reeker...you will find No Man's Land - The Rise of Reeker to be a pleasant surprise. For those of you that haven't seen the original, this prequel will be an entertaining introduction to the story of the smelly murderer that awaits in Death Valley.
In a no-name Death Valley town, Sheriff Reed (Robert Pine) is ready for retirement. A local hero, Sheriff Pine is best known for apprehending the "Death Valley Drifter" 20 years before. Little does he know that the murderous drifter has come back, 2 decades after his execution. And needless to say, he ain't smelling too good.
The unsuspecting Sheriff, his Deputy son, a waitress and three robbery suspects are suddenly trapped at a dusty road-side diner, and sealed off from any outside help by a strange alien force that has reincarnated the area's most notorious serial killer. Stuck in this strange place, somehwere between life and death, this handful of people must figure out how to stop Reeker and send him back to hell...
I know this story line sounds very strange, but there is no easy way to gracefully put it into a nut-shell. This movie bends many of the expected genre rules, resulting in a gruesome and sometimes funny film.
Though I did not like this movie as much as the original Reeker, I did find No Man's Land to be a hoot to watch: it's very graphic and there are a few real gross-out septic-tank moments that will leave you squirming. While it is considered to be a horror movie,
No Man's Land is not what I would call scary; it comes across as more of a weird thriller.
The acting is ho-hum, but the characters do deliver some funny one-liners. All in all, No Man's Land - The Rise of Reeker does make for an amusing rental. And once you've seen it, go rent the original Reeker for the rest of the story...
