When I saw the trailers for Quarantine, I decided that I had to see it immediately! It had been quite a while since a horror movie really scared the be-Jesus out of me and, boy-oh-boy, does this movie ever deliver! I, right along with the other movie-goers, screamed and jumped my way through all of its frightening and shocking scenes. By the time the movie ended, I was ready to buy another ticket and watch it again!
The movie begins as Angela (Jennifer Carpenter), an investigative reporter, and her camera-man, Scott (Steve Harris), head into a local fire department. Their job, for the night, is to ride along on any emergency calls and interview the firefighters. Soon, the alarm sounds and they set off in the fire trucks, sirens wailing.
Arriving at a small apartment building, Jennifer follows the firemen inside as the landlord tells them of a woman screaming up on the second floor. Upon entering her shadowy apartment, we see this elderly woman; clad only in a wisp of a nightgown; she is covered in blood, foaming at the mouth, and swaying strangely in the dark. One of the accompanying police officers approaches her and she attacks; taking a large bite out of his neck.
Hang on to your socks, folks, because this is when Quarantine grabs you by the throat and never lets up!
Restraining the woman and grabbing the injured officer, they all make for the front doors. One problem -- they've been locked in from the outside. Police and SWAT teams have surrounded the building and will not let them out.
So Jennifer and Scott are trapped with the firemen and the frightened tenants as the mysterious zombie-like virus spreads...
Directed by John E. Dowdle, Quarantine is one of those shaky and terrifying films that has that home-movie feel to it. This filming style makes you feel like you are part of the terror of it, not just an outside viewer. Like the characters, you are straining to see in the darkness, wondering what waits behind every corner as they try to find a way out.
The entire cast does a great job and really bring their terror and fear home for the viewer. While the film doesn't have much in the way of special effects; the raw, gritty feel of it makes the film all the scarier.
I have to say that Quarantine is one of the best horror movies I have seen in some time and I cannot wait to see it again. And I will be the first one in-line to buy it when it comes out on DVD!
Highly Recommended
