The Pang Brothers are back with the third installment of The Eye series, but I have to admit to being surprised at the direction that the filmmakers went with it. I understand that they wanted to make each film from the series different to be able to stand alone from the last, but The Eye 3 had me a little confused and frustrated.
The movie begins as we join 5 young friends as they are telling ghost stories over bottles of beer and bags of chips. Chongkwai (Ray MacDonald) tells of a creepy book he had purchased; the book store owner warning him never to turn to the last page.
Pulling the book from his back-pack, the friends are fascinated by it. The book conatins 10 strange rituals and practices used to contact the dead. Not taking it seriously, the friends begin with the Thai version of the Ouija board and are excited when it begins to work. After seeing a couple of ghosts, their curiosity has them trying all 10 of the steps, but when the spirit activity gets downright scary, the friends begin to disappear one by one and the rest are left to wonder what price they will pay for dabbling in black magic.
Now that's the basic outline of the story, however when you toss in some bad acting, an odd collection of happy carnival-style music and some very misplaced humor and you have a very confusing film. While The Eye 3 does have some classic Pang Brothers' scares, they are sadly overpowered by the silliness of the rest of it.
The filmmakers attempt at humor was a valiant one, but it makes this film too far removed from the frightening and fabulous films we expect under the Pang duo's becon. If they do make an Eye 4, I only hope they return to the tried-and-true "scare-the-crap-out-of-you" formula that has served them so well in the past.
The Eye 3 was a little disappointing as it was such a good plot, just poorly executed.
