Save Your Soul, Before They Take It From You...

The supernatural-thriller Lost Colony: The Legend of Roanoke, that originally aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, is now available for rent at your local video store. The movie is a fictitious take on the true story of the 117 British colonists who flat disappeared from the island of Roanoke back in 1587. No trace of the settlers could ever be found, save for one word that had been carved into the side of a tree : 'CROATOAN'... The mysterious disappearance of the colonists has never been solved.

The movie begins as Ananias (Adrian Paul, TV's Highlander Series) and his pregnant wife Eleanor (Frida Farell) and a few dozen British settlers arrive in the new world to settle on Roanoke Island, off of the coast of Virginia. When strange apparitions are seen in the woods and Eleanore has nightmares of ghouls coming to take her new-born baby, the colonists wonder how to get off of the island for good. But no British ship will be back for months and the mainland is crawling with Indian tribes that will kill them on sight.

Soon, Ananias discovers ancient Norse writings on the wall of a local cave and fears that they may be up against the dreaded, mythological wraiths; evil Norse spirits. These spirits feed on souls, so Ananias and the remaining settlers must figure out how to stop the wraiths before they are all murdered in the night.

I have always been fascinated by the mystery of Roanoke Island and though this movie is merely a theory on what might have happened, the filmmakers do a pretty good job of it. The story line is interesting and the acting is very well done, but the special effects in Lost Colony are a constant reminder that you are watching a made-for-television movie. The effects feel low budget and take away from the film's overall quality. Perhaps it would have been better to not see the wraiths at all, instead of the glowing green ghoulies that they give us.

While I don't really recommend Lost Colony as a purchase, it does make for a good rental.

    Overall Rating: 2 1/2
