"Damn...That's hard-core." - Scott (William H. Bowman)
Automaton Transfusion, directed by Steven C. Miller, is a gritty, fast-paced horror movie that starts off with a gruesome bang and never lets up. Shot in Florida, in only nine days, the film is packed with herds of flesh-eating zombies that are faster and nastier than any we've seen before.
When an army experiment goes horribly awry, the undead are un-leashed and as they begin to rip, tear and gnaw their way through this small town, no one is safe. Unlike the zombies we all know and love, these zombies are not brain-less and slow. These new military super-zombies are smart; skillfully attacking the living like packs of wolves. A handful of teenagers are forced to fight back and even do the unthinkable to survive...
Now this may sound like a weak movie plot, and it is. But, after all it's a zombie flick, we have to take it for what it is. And this one will require the viewer to possess a very strong stomach. The filming is grainy and strobe-like and is annoying at first, but you get used to it as the movie goes along. The result is a brutal, in-your-face, zombie gore-fest and its Special Effects will surely raise the bar for all zombie films to come.
I only had two real problems with the movie: The acting by the young and beautiful cast is nominal, at best and the ending had me wanting to scream "What were you thinking?"
The only time a "To Be Continued" works is in a soap opera or a TV miniseries or the
Star Wars Saga. That kind of cliff-hanger was a huge disappointment here. They are threatening to have a Part II sometime in 2009, but I still think this film could have ended with a bang, not a heavy sigh.
If you are brave enough to rent this graphic film , make sure the kids are out of the room...Scratch that...Make sure they are out of the house, folks.
While I did enjoy Automaton Transfusion for its fast pace and great effects, the ending keeps me from giving this film a better rating...
Overall Rating: 2 1/2
