THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST...

Stephen King has gone and done it again; given us a glimpse into the darkest corners of his brilliant mind with the film adaptation of Riding the Bullet. Originally writen exclusively for the internet, the movie was then written for the screen and nicely directed by Mick Garris (Desperation, The Stand).

The movie begins as we join Alan (Jonathan Jackson, Insomnia) , a handsome college student that has a fascination with death. After a failed attempt at suicide, Alan learns that his mother has had a stroke and he needs to get home right away. Hitchhiking the 100 miles to the hospital, Alan will come across evils, both real and imagined, as he desperately tries to reach his mother.

Set in the late 60's, Riding the Bullet is filled with the popular music of the era, free-love and free-flowing marijuana. With an incredible eye for detail, each scene has the right music, cars and anti-Vietnam War sentiment that was prevelant at the time.

I really enjoyed watching this movie, though the extensive use of flash-backs and hallucinations were a bit disorienting. I suppose that's the point; to get the viewer as nervous and twitchy as Alan's character; wondering what is real and what is not.

Outside of that, I think that Riding the Bullet is an intricate and thoughtful adaptation of Stephen King's story. Even Mr. King was quoted as saying : "It is the best of the independent films made from my work since Stand By Me."

Be sure to watch the Special Features on this dic for a Cast and Crew Commentary, a Stills Gallery and an interesting short on the making of the film.

Recommended as a rental and/or purchase.
