"It's an evil fucking room..." -- Mgr. Olin (Samuel L. Jackson)

From the gloriously twisted mind of Stephen King, comes the film adaptation of his story, 1408. Incredibly creepy and downright disturbing, this movie gives us an unsettling glimpse into the abyss...

The movie begins as we join Mike Enslin (John Cusack, Identity), a cynical author, who investigates paranormal phenomena. He stumbles from inn to inn with his ghost hunting tools and is always disappointed at never getting to see a ghost up-close-and-personal.

After receiving a mysterious post card warning him to stay away from room 1408 at the New York Dolphin Hotel, Mike is intrigued. All but forcing his way in, Mike is warned by the hotel manager, Mr. Olin (Samuel L. Jackson, Pulp Fiction) that the room is dangerous; there have been 56 deaths in the room; the causes ranging from suicide to murder and even self-mutilation.

Not heeding the warnings, Mike gets his way and settles into room 1408, doubting the stories as he fires-up his EMF detector and tape-recorder. But soon, the hotel room comes alive and after chocolates mysteriously appear on his pillow and the radio plays on its own, Mike begins to believe in the haunting. When the spirit activity escalates and becomes more and more frightening, Mike begins to wonder if he will ever get out of room 1408 alive...

1408 is a terrifically scary film and every scene has Stephen King's talent written all over it. As things go from bad to worse, with Mike's character, it really gets the viewer wondering: 'Could I maintain my sanity if it were me?'

I think that the hotel room may be a metaphor for Mike's mind; as he is trapped in it, and as things spin out of control, he begins to lose touch with reality. John Cusack is terrifically talented, and nails the role of Mike, the skeptical-writer-driven-insane. He really brings Stephen King's story to life with his acting and I found that I couldn't take my eyes off of him. The film is flawlessly directed by Mikael Håfström (Derailed) as it must have been difficult making each scene unique on such a small set.

1408 is definitely one of the best Stephen King adaptations since The Shining and The Green Mile and I can't wait to watch it again!

Definitely recommended as a rental and/or purchase.
