"Give me your pain...Give me your suffering..." -- Dr. Burke (Mark Rolston)

Asylum begins as we join Madison (Sara Roemer, Disturbia), as she arrives for her first day of college. But moments after she arrives in her dorm room, Madison begins to hear strange noises and has frightening hallucinations of her dead brother.

Trying desperately to fit in and ignore the things that are happening to her, she befriends a quirky group of co-eds and they soon learn that their dorm used to be a mental asylum. Run by a Dr. Burke some 60 years ago, the demented doctor had tortured and experimented on his teen patients, promising to 'cure' them. After years of torture, the patients had finally turned on the psychotic-doctor and murdered him.

Thinking the history of the place to be very cool, the co-eds head off to explore the sealed-off asylum wing. But, the ghost of Dr. Burke is waiting for them, ready to continue his horrible experiments. Now, Madison and her pals must try to survive the college experience, in more ways than one!

Now, yes, the story line is a little weak in Asylum, but I found the character development to be quite interesting. The young and beautiful cast really do a nice job and the script was well written. The only problem I had with this movie was Dr. Burke (Mark Rolston, Green Mile) This character is so over the top, as are his make-up and one-liners. I think that the movie would have been scarier if Dr. Burke's character did not speak at all; his lines make him seem comical and corny. The result is a horror movie that is not scary; only bloody.

All in all, Asylum is not a terrible movie, just not well executed. Too bad, as it had the potential to be very frightening.

    Recommend as a rental only.
