"...you said you wished you had more to give!..."-- Otis (Bostin Christopher)
Otis, a clever and grisly horror-comedy, flawlessly Directed by Tony Krantz, will make you cringe and laugh and have you forever looking at your pizza-delivery-dude sideways! I found this comically dark and twisted movie to be quite impressive and a hoot to watch!
The movie begins as a fat, reclusive, pizza-delivery-dude named Otis (Bostin Christopher, Unbreakable) has resorted to kidnapping and torturing suburban girls. Oh, he is a bonafide psychopathic killer, but as he was spurned by beautiful girls as a teen, he believes that imprisoning young girls now is a way of wooing them and gaining their affections. Naturally, his victims are repulsed by this idea and fight back; a fatal mistake.
When Otis forgets to chain his latest victim, Riley (Ashley Johnson, Columbus Day), she escapes and calls her parents from a quickie-mart pay phone. Her family is relieved that she is safe and tell her that the police are on the way, but not to give them Otis' name or address. Why? Because they want to take care of Otis on their own. Fearing that the inept and insensitive police force will screw up Otis's arrest, Riley's suburban-middle-class family get a pizza cutter, a nail gun and a golf club and head to Otis' house for their revenge.
Now this story line may sound horrible and serious, and it is at first. But as the movie goes along, the humor of it begins to overcome the horror. Writers Erik Jendresen (Band of Brothers) and Thomas Schnauz ("X-Files") have created a storyline and script that is terribly gruesome and hilarious at the same time.
The 70's and 80's rock-hits musical score, by James S. Levine, adds another fitting layer to this movie. As Otis, a grown man, seems to be emotionally stuck in his teens during the 80's, the music selections are perfect; no matter how many fancy pizzas Otis delivers during the movie, the total always comes to $19.84. As much of the music is from 1984, I'm sure that little tidbit was intentional.
I thoroughly enjoyed Otis and highly recommend it if you like shocking and brilliant horror-comedies!
Don't miss the Special Features on this disc for an entertaining commentary, a groovy alternative ending and a peek inside the twisted world of Otis.
Recommended as a rental and/or purchase.
