BIANCA BARNETT | THE VAMP: dystopia Siren | July 2008
Meet our 21st Century "IT Girl!" For a former 'Goth' girl, actress Bianca Barnett is a wonderfully warm and optimistic young lady. Very serious about her craft and her love of film, she still manages to maintain a light-hearted and stunning personality that makes her an absolute joy to know!
I've read that your parents founded a monster company called Lunar Models, did you get to work on these projects as well?
I was really tiny when they founded the company, but I watched it grow from my parents baking Jupiter IIs in our kitchen oven to my father's full fledged business that shipped worldwide. Jupiter II is the spaceship used by the Robinson family in the original Lost in Space television series. As far as I know, it was the first model kit my parents made to sell for the company. It afforded me the opportunity to meet legends of the genre and even at that young age, I knew it was truly a unique experience.
So how did your 'dark musings' begin? What was the turning point in your life that brought you to your love of the dark side?
I think I've always been drawn to the dark side! My mother says when I was about two years old, she took me shopping for Christmas stocking stuffers and I picked out a rubber skeleton. He was my pet "Skelly" and I had him for YEARS! When the video for Thriller first came out, I was terrified by it and would run out of the room when it was on. In the third grade my gym teacher wanted my class to put on a production of Thriller for a school play. I was forced to watch it and actually loved it, learned the moves and was praised for being one of the best "zombies" on stage! I checked out books on stage makeup, Halloween, witchcraft and rented every horror movie Blockbuster carried. By the time I was a young teen, I was in full fledge goth mode every day!
You've also seen some of the world's greatest nightmares up close (in Bob Burns' home) what did you see that set your future in stone?
I think the two most striking things I saw were the werewolf from An American Werewolf in London and an original dress worn by the beautiful Yvonne de Carlo as Lily Munster! I had the chance to sit in the original time machine, see puppets from Alien and got freaked out by the dummy head of possessed Linda Blair! Just meeting someone who had such a fulfilling career in the film business was such an inspiration. I've always been fascinated with the magic of films!
What's the best horror film you've seen this year, and what was your favorite scene from it?
"Troll 2" and "From Hell It Came" are some of the best worst films I've seen this year. That's becoming a huge hobby of mine, watching horror/sci fi movies that are so bad, they are great! The best scene from "Troll 2" would have to be the classic "They're eating her. And then they're gonna eat me. OH MY GOOOOOOODDDDDDDDD!!!" scene. (The fly on his face is just icing on the cake!) And how can you go wrong with a walking tree monster called Tabanga in "From Hell It Came"... ha ha ha!
I have to ask, have you seen "Jacob's Ladder" in your travels? (That's one horror/thriller that is a hands-down A-List horror film!...probably the only one) [Laughs]
Yes, I love that film! Gritty films about the Vietnam war and psychological thrillers are two of my favorite genres; both types of films linger seem to linger with me in a dark way for a while...I still have to work hard at not letting things affect me so much.
What was the worst horror film you've seen this year, and what killed it for you?
Hmm, I tried to watch "I Know Who Killed Me" since it was on the other night, but it was pretty awful. A lot of modern horror/thriller films don't quite hit the mark anymore. I would love for that to change!
What can you tell us about your gorgeous “Glam Flapper” stylings,
and “The Perils of Rock and Roll Decadence" period?
Oh, well, thank you so much for the compliment! I've always been drawn to the glamour and debauchery of the Roarin' Twenties. It was sort of my interpretation of that mixed with my goth/rocker attitude. I was very young, rebellious and had no qualms with artistic nudity and copious amounts of drugs and alcohol. There's still a hint of that in me, but I've matured a lifetime or two in the past few years.
What's your favorite indulgence?
Buttermilk pancakes, fresh apple bongs, sleeping in and waking up next to the man I love. No more hard drugs or booze for me, I've had my fill. :)
What do people love about you when they get to know you?
I have been told I am very down to earth and extremely loving and giving. I'm also quite girly, giggly and silly despite my macabre interests.
All of your favorite flicks involve vampires (even The Shining’s
Overlook was a vampire in its own way), so what is it about this icon
that seems to draw the style of your imagery?
Wow, I never really thought about that, great observation! Probably because they are loners and outcasts in society and generally tormented souls. I can relate to the isolation, sorrow and guilt they must face but I'm also intrigued by the power and romantic allure they represent..
Do you have a scoop for us on Albino Farm?
They officially screened it at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in New Jersey, so I am hoping that gives it a boost! The producers are still looking to make the best distribution deal so it will be released fairly soon. Keep checking back at my website for details.
Have you heard great feedback with it?
I have heard a few positive comments from people who were at the screening. There seems to have been a huge Chris Jericho fan gathering at that particular event... I hope those fans had a great time and enjoyed the film!
What is In A Spiral State about? Who is your character, Marlena, in relation to the story? And most importantly, when can we expect to see it?
I don't know much about "In a Spiral State", and that's exactly what director Ramzi Abed wants! My character is a drug addled model with a manipulative personality that ends up in trouble. From what Ramzi has told me, the film is still in the editing stage but looks amazing. Keep your eyes peeled for the dvd release.
Where is the creepiest place you’ve shot a film and/or a modeling session?
I've been fortunate enough to film in some great places - the back rooms of the Egyptian theater, Hollywood mansions from the 1920s, and a few film shoots were done in caves! We shot Albino Farm on location in Missouri and at one point while I was on break (in full prosthetics) my boyfriend pulled two huge spiders off my head. Apparently they were making webs on my giant headpiece... that was pretty creepy, but I still wish I had gotten a photo! :)
You're definately a braver woman than I am! What do you have lined up next?
I just finished a music video for Lucien Desar's “Decayed Events” directed by Jim Towns. I'm also in talks with starring in a trilogy of horror films that begin shooting in a few weeks. Then I'm filming "The Pick-Up" in August which features Edwin Neal. I've got two projects lined up with director/actor Parrish Randall later in the year. Hopefully it will all pan out because I love working! In between all that I am juggling modeling, maintaining my website, answering fan mail, promoting Albino Farm, doing interviews and co-hosting an Indie Horror radio show on Sunday nights. You can learn all about what I am up to here myspace.com/biancaabel ... please add me as a friend!
!
Thank you SO MUCH for speaking with me Bianca, you are definately a woman of true strength and passion and we love having you with us!
