The Two Super-Powers of the Galaxy are Back.. And No Species is Safe...
"Re-qui-em : N. The Roman Catholic mass for a deceased person."
As a long time, and I mean - a long time -- fan of both the Alien and Predator series, I was so hoping that this one would live up to my expectations. (Note: the first AVP did not.)
To give you an idea of how long I've been a rabid fan, I'll let you in on a little secret... when I was 14 and living in Japan with my parents, the original Alien was released. As my family and I had already read the book, we were beyond excited to see it on the big screen.
We rushed out to a small Japanese theater nearby where the film was shown in English with Japanese subtitles. Now you must understand: Japanese women don't ever show that they are upset, they only titter quietly behind a raised hand; that day my mother and I were the ONLY people in the theater that screamed !!
I have followed each installment of both series with great anticipation, ever since.
AVP - Requiem is technically the sixth of the Alien series, and the fourth of Predator's, and does not fail to deliver the scares that devotees, like me, expect.
It starts out as the first AVP left off: a half-Alien and half-Predator explodes from the body of our Predator 'hero'. This new and nasty half-breed beastie is the best of both species; the dread-locks and high tech gadgets of one, along with the acid-blood, breeding strategies and love of killing of the other. Like the first AVP, this new breed of Alien sides with the blood-thirsty Aliens, that we all know and love. The Predator -- that hunts the Aliens -- once again sides with us humans, combining keen intelligence with an strangely compassionate instinct.
After a UFO, filled with our sleek and terrible Aliens, crashes in a remote Colorado town, they proceed to do what they do best: find human hosts, slaughter everyone and take over. Soon a lone Predator follows, hell-bent on doing the Aliens in, and, for him, the unsuspecting citizen's of this small town are just in his way.
Once the Aliens have planted eggs in and/or killed most of the townsfolk, a rag-tag group of survivors has to make terrible choices that will affect their survival. Dallas (Steven Pasquale) and his little brother, Ricky (Johnny Lewis) do all that they can to protect the only person who can fly a helicopter, Kelly (Reiko Aylesworth, TV's 24 and Law and Order) to get them all out of the town that has become an inter-galactic battlefield. Finding themselves expendable, this tiny group of frightened people finally realize that they are fighting for the survival of humankind.
AVP - Requiem is the perfect mesh of the two movie series: the sound effects and music are a slick combination of both styles, giving due respect to each; the creatures' FX maintain their glorious savagery, (very well done by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff, Jr.), and the movie's direction is deftly done by The Strause Brothers, Colin and Greg: fast, gruesome and totally thrill-packed.
So, I ask you, what is better than the ultimate battle between Alien and Predator?
But, this party is just gettin' started...
