"...and only despair was left at the end..." -- Woman in Red (Riona Hazuki)"
Retribution, the 'Official Selection' of the New York Asian Film Festival, FantAsia Film Festival and The Fantastic Fest, is 104 minutes of delightfully creepy and disturbing suspense. The movie is Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure and Pulse) and is filmed with a visually striking style and eye for detail. Once this movie started, I found that I could not look away...
The movie begins at a murder scene; a young lady in a red dress is face down in a puddle. Seeing no obvious reason for her murder, the police are crawling around the coastal construction sight, searching for clues. Detective Yoshioka (Koji Yakusho) finds a button in a nearby puddle -- a very familiar button. Putting it in his pocket, he runs home to find that one of his coats is missing the exact same type of button. Confused, but certain that he had done nothing wrong, he sends the button to the lab. When his fingerprints are found on it, he really begins to worry.
Soon, there is another murder; same M.O. and evidence that also points back to the Detective. Suspecting that he is being framed for the murders, he delves deeper into the mystery.
To his horror, the ghost of the Lady in Red begins to taunt and torment him and the Detective begins to question his own sanity. This movie is peppered with the famous Japanese earthquakes (I, myself, have ridden a few of them-they're corkers!) and I believe them to be a metaphor for his shaky grip on reality.
When yet another body is found, Detective Yoshioka must find out what his connection is to the grisly murders, before the ghost of the Lady in Red comes for him again.
Retribution is a refreshing 'who-dunnit' with a supernatural twist. I highly recommend this movie as a purchase and/or rental.
