CLAUDIA VERELA | DJ DIVA: dystopia Siren | March 2008

Dystopia Magazine: What phenomenal nationalities make up such an exotic Claudia?

Claudia Verela: I'm mixed:  My Mom is from El Salvador and my Dad [is from] Haiti.  I was born in Burbank, CA but grew up in Miami, Florida.

How long have you been modeling? What got you started?

I've been modeling since the late 90's.  What got me started was a local talent Agency in Miami Beach called Act 1.  I was working after school, at a swimsuit shop in a mall and the agency supplied models for a store commercial.  She gave me her card and told me to call them if I was ever interested in working as a commercial model.  I called a few years later and signed with them.

So 70's horror gets the 'holla' from you, hmm? Which one can still 'getcha' when you watch it? What's the best scene?

There are a few favorites!  My favorite movie of all time is The Exorcist (1972). I can watch it a thousand times and it still scares the bejezus out of me!   My favorite part of the movie is not a particular scene but rather the sounds--the demonic and torture screams and creepy voice coming from a little girl still give me goose bumps.  I grew up in a Catholic family, and the though that demonic possessions could exist are scary to think about!

I also love Nosferatu, a 1930's German silent film adapted from Bram Stoker's Dracula and directed by F. W Murnau.  Max Schreck plays Count Orlock or Nosferatu and he seems to get scarier looking as the movie progresses.  The use of shadows in the movie is chilling; the scene when he rises out of the coffin when he's on the boat did it for me!  I had nightmares!   I also loved Polanski's 1968 Rosemary's Baby. The Devil scares me!  I recently saw another horror movie that I loved called The Red Shoes.  It's a Korean film, directed by Yong-gyun Kim.  It's a ghost story about a pair of red shoes that are haunted.  You have to see it!

You have Zombie (the international title for the amazing classic, Dawn of the Dead) and Night of the Living Dead down on your faves list, what do you like best about Romero's films? Did you get to see his latest, Diary of the Dead

I've only seen the 1968 black and white version, the 1990 and the 2006 version of Night of the Living Dead.  I've also seen Dawn of the Dead.  I haven't seen Diary of the Dead.  I like Romero because he plays homage to the horror and science-fiction films of the 1950s.  I love all those old sci-fi and horror thrillers and movies that play on the frailty of human existence.  What I found terrifying was that the monsters were not some aliens, that they were us and were caused by some epidemic or sickness and that the government was unable to protect us.

Did you ever catch that extended edition of The Exorcist, with the scene of Regan on the stairs? I'm not going to blow it for you if you haven't, but it's definitely wicked!

Yes I have! Awesome!

Do you have any plans of being a Scream Queen in the future?

No

What's the best horror film you've seen this year, and what was you're favorite scene from it?

I haven’t seen a really good scary movie in years. The 2 that I saw and considered decent were Saw 1 & 2. I was disappointed with Hostel and you couldn’t pay me any money to see its sequel.

What was the worst horror film you've seen this year, and what killed it for you? It was from 2005.  I didn't get to see Hostel when it came out because I couldn't get anyone to go with me.  I finally saw it last year on cable and it sucked!  It was gruesome but that's about it.  I can't bring myself to watch Hostel 2

Do you agree with the idea of remakes, or should they just let the classics remain 'classic'?

Remakes are ok. It’s [the] sequels that are normally lame.

According to MaximOnline (as a Hometown Hottie Competitor & Semi-Finalist), you're a Pacino fan too. Love it! What's you're favorite Pacino film so far?

He’s such a great actor with so many awesome movies under his belt. I’ve watched a ton of his movies! I love his character in Ocean’s Thirteen. There’s so many: Insomnia, Any Given Sunday, The Devil’s Advocate….

You can't talk about Al without dipping into a couple of mob movies...Well actually you can't talk to me about Al without me dipping into a couple of mob movies (laughs)

I love the Godfather trilogy and I also love Scarface!

Who would you place you bets on to win a match of Scarface VS. Corleone?

That’s a tough one…I’d say Scarface. He’s psycho and crazy!

You've also said that you sometimes have to be tough, "just a lil' bit ghetto, that can talk like a trucker". I'd never guess that in a million years, but what can possibly push that button where the shoes and the earrings are coming off?

I didn’t mean it in that sense. I’m not the type of girl that fights. I would never put myself in a situation like that. I am outspoken and sometimes the things that come out of my mouth are not so “refined”. I curse a lot and my boyfriend has labeled me his “trucker girlfriend”.

Are (or were) you a Sopranos fan as well? Were you screaming at the finale like the rest of us? (Talk about getting 'a lil' bit ghetto'...there was no lil on this end. Believe me!)

I watched some of the Sopranos series, but I didn’t follow it too closely. I did watch the last few episodes. I watched the finale but it left me wanting more! I thought the ending was kinda lame.

How long have you been with Chunga Radio? What's been your wildest call on the show (or are you allowed to say? (laughs)How often can we look forward to hearing you on the show?

I’ve been with Chunga Radio since July '07. I go in once a week to record a 2-hour show that plays daily. It’s a pre recorded show, so we don’t take any calls, but we plan on recording live segments in the future. I love having my own radio show. I went to school for Communications and Broadcasting and I’m doing what I love!

Where have some of your favorite shoots/jobs taken place?

Ocho Rios Jamaica and the Cayman Islands! Beautiful!

You've shot with some incredible photographers; do you have anyone else on your immediate wish list?

I’d love to shoot with the fashion greats, Steven Meisel, Mario Testino and Patrick Demarchelier. I would cut off my left toe for an opportunity to shoot with them! I also would love to shoot with Johnny Croslin, Paul Buceta, Rich Markese and Michael Vincent. I love their work! Now can someone hook a girl up?

What is your biggest dream? What projects are you passionate about?

My biggest dream is to work in Broadcasting, [and] I’m passionate about every project that comes my way. I keep saying it, but I’m a lucky girl. I get to work full time in a tough, tough industry.

What have been the biggest highlights to your modeling career so far?

I’ve been pretty lucky! I’ve appeared in numerous calendars and magazines such as Blackmen’s, Maxim, Maxim en Español, Main Stage Magazine, DXL Magazine, MMA Sports and Smooth Magazine.

What's your favorite indulgence?

Shoes and skin products.

What do you have lined up next?

I’ll be working at the Arnold Classic Expo in Ohio this weekend. Watch for me on in American Curves Magazine in March!

Is there anything you'd like to promote at this time?

Yep! Me! Visit my website and hire me to work for you! Join me on MySpace/ClaudiaVerela. Vote for me at Miss Internet Pageant 2008 Online and you gotta tune in to my radio show on ChungaRadio.com!
